Uganda Free is part of Riccardo Lopez’s Contemporary Mask Collection, a series exploring identity, oppression, and symbolic resistance through portraiture and layered media. Printed on a transparency and overlaid on a textured paper backing, the piece gains material depth and a sense of ghostly presence. The red marks act as visual scars and metaphoric barriers, evoking themes of political trauma, colonial legacy, and the struggle for autonomy. The work challenges the viewer to confront modern forms of invisibility and the resilience of cultural identity.
