“Uganda Free – Contemporary Masks” is a compelling piece by Riccardo Lopez, also known as White Rabbit, part of his series dedicated to the victims of endless conflicts in African countries. Painted in his Ibiza studio in 2013, this work is created with acrylic paints on a large wooden panel using sprays, palette knives, and brushes. The portrait, set in an array of striking hues such as orange, purple, and blue, captures the contemplative face of a young person, embodying the hardships faced by Ugandans amidst ongoing strife. The paint drips and layering techniques create a textural depth, reflecting a mask that is both literal and symbolic—signifying resilience and the hidden pain of war-affected individuals. The use of vibrant colors alongside dark, shadowed areas underscores the duality of hope and despair, making it a thought-provoking piece that speaks to the resilience of children in conflict zones.
