This work presents the abstract face of a child, using intense splashes of color and contrasting shades to highlight the tragedy and resilience of young war victims in Africa. Lopez’s use of splatter techniques and distorted lines symbolizes the scars—both visible and hidden—left by conflict. The Contemporary Masks collection reflects on the untold stories of vulnerable children, who are forced to wear metaphorical masks in their daily struggle for survival. Through bold abstraction, Lopez captures the essence of both pain and perseverance, offering a raw commentary on war and the silent strength of its youngest casualties. This work, like the others in the collection, invites viewers to look beyond the mask and see the humanity, loss, and inner pride of children facing unimaginable hardship.
