“Sudan Free – Contemporary Masks,” part of Riccardo Lopez’s Contemporary Masks series, is an evocative portrayal dedicated to the resilience of Sudanese children affected by ongoing conflict. Painted in his Ibiza studio in 2013, this large-scale work on wood utilizes acrylics applied with sprays, palette knives, and brushes. The artwork presents a close-up of a young face, with piercing, expressive eyes that reflect both hope and suffering. Bright, dynamic colors like pink, yellow, blue, and orange contrast with the darker contours of the face, creating a visually impactful composition that captures attention. Lopez’s deliberate use of color drips and layered textures enhances the emotional intensity of the piece, symbolizing the internal and external turmoil faced by Sudanese youth. Through this vibrant yet somber portrait, Lopez raises awareness of the silent suffering endured by children in war-torn regions, emphasizing the need for compassion and change.
